Jake Gyllenhaal And Jessica Chastain To Star In ‘The Division’ From ‘Atomic Blonde’ Director David Leitch

Variety – “Deadpool 2” director David Leitch has set his sights on his next project, signing on to helm Ubisoft’s “The Division” movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.

The news comes just months after it was announced that he’s also on board to direct the “Fast and Furious” spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Sources stress that the Universal spinoff will shoot first, as that film is already set to go into production this fall, and the hope is that Leitch would move on to prep “The Division” some time in 2019.

“Gold” director Stephen Gaghan was previously attached to helm the video game adaptation, but has since left the project.

Leitch’s producing partner, Kelly McCormick, will produce along with Leitch through their 87Eleven banner, as well as Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker of Nine Stories and Chastain and Kelly Carmichael of Freckle Films alongside Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

Based on the best-selling video game, the story is set in a near future where a pandemic virus is spread via paper money on Black Friday, decimating New York City and killing millions. By Christmas, what’s left of society has descended into chaos. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, is activated in an attempt to save who and what remains.

Developed and published by Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment with assistance from Red Storm Entertainment, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, the third-person shooter quickly became the fastest-selling new IP in video game history after its initial launch. Ubisoft recently announced that the game reached the milestone of 20 million players and a sequel is in development with more details to be unveiled at E3 next month.

Gyllenhaal and Chastain have been with the film project since its conception and have been persistent in making sure that it matches the tone of the video game, while also reaching audiences who appreciate the actors’ own past work.

As for Leitch, the stunt coordinator-turned-director has been a rising star on the action scene after he and his stunt partner, Chad Stahelski, broke out with the cult hit “John Wick.” Stahelski took the reins for “John Wick 2” as Leitch moved on to the Charlize Theron action movie “Atomic Blonde,” the film that helped land him the job of “Deadpool 2” after that sequel lost its director.

The early buzz around “Deadpool 2” proved so impressive that Johnson aggressively pursued Leitch for his “Fast and Furious” spinoff before the in-demand director could land his next film.

Jake Gyllenhaal to star & produce ‘Welcome To Vienna’

DEADLINE – Focus Features has acquired screen rights to the upcoming Kevin Wignall novel To Die in Vienna, and will turn it into the Jake Gyllenhaal star vehicle Welcome to Vienna. Gyllenhaal will produce through his production company Nine Stories alongside Riva Marker. Nine Stories exec veep Annie Marter will be exec producer.

The novel will be published by Thomas & Mercer in June. The pic is contemporized, but the tone feels like a throwback to paranoid thrillers like The Conversation. Gyllenhaal will play Freddie Makin, a civilian surveillance contractor who for the past year has been watching Jiang Cheng, a Chinese academic in Vienna. When Freddie returns home early one day with a migraine, he interrupts a break-in at his apartment. The intruder escapes, but then comes back and tries to kill him. From that moment on, the contractor realizes he is a hunted man who clearly saw something he shouldn’t have. He realizes that he not only doesn’t know who is trying to kill him or why, he doesn’t really even know who is actually employing him. When Cheng also disappears, Freddie gets the first indications that it might be the CIA trying to shut him down. His only hope for survival is that they don’t know the whole truth about Freddie Makin either, or about the past he’s running away from.

Wignall, the bestselling author of nine novels, is represented by ICM Partners and Gelfman/Schneider.

Nine Stories most recently produced the Gyllenhaal-starrer Stronger, and the Paul Dano-directed Wildlife. That film premiered at Sundance and stars Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan.

Jake Gyllenhaal Named Face of Santos de Cartier Watch

WWD – Jake Gyllenhaal is joining forces with Cartier as the new face of its Santos de Cartier watch, WWD has learned exclusively.

The star of films including “Brokeback Mountain” and “Stronger” will appear in a film advertisement for the timepiece due to be released this spring in movie theaters and online.

Integrity, dedication and boundless curiosity: Jake Gyllenhaal embodies the Santos de Cartier man. A man who commits utterly and does nothing by halves. A man who defines fearless as honest and true to himself,Cartier said in a statement on Monday.

Jake Gyllenhaal reveals a new side to his talent with every film, performing a wide variety of roles. Cartier was drawn to his invincible style and fearless spirit,” it added.

The endorsement marks a departure for Cartier, which has not previously featured a celebrity in its advertisements, although it has close relationships with film industry figures like Sofia Coppola, who as a “friend” of the house was pictured wearing its Clé de Cartier watch in 2016 and last year directed a commercial for the Panthère watch.

Though considered one of Hollywood’s most stylish leading men, Gyllenhaal has been highly selective in his brand endorsements.

The American actor and producer last year made his debut as an ambassador for Calvin Klein’s Eternity fragrance in a black-and-white spot shot by Cary Fukunaga. It portrays him as a doting father alongside model Liya Kebede and child star Leila.

The Santos watch was created by Louis Cartier in 1904 for his friend, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to have a watch worn on the wrist so it would be easier to tell the time when flying. It has since become a pillar of the jeweler’s watch collection, alongside models like the Tank and Panthère.

Cartier presented a new version of the Santos, equipped with interchangeable leather strap or bracelet, at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva in January.
