‘Free Solo’ Oscar Winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin Eye ‘Helicopter Heist’ With Jake Gyllenhaal, Netflix

EXCLUSIVE: Fresh from directing the hair-raising Free Solo and winning the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin are in early talks with Netflix to helm an untitled movie based on the Jonas Bonnier book The Helicopter Heist, a drama that will star Jake Gyllenhaal. He’ll produce it with his Nine Stories partner Riva Marker and ACE Content partner Evan Hayes. The latter was a producer of Free Solo.

The Steven Knight-scripted drama tells the true story of how four young men from the Swedish suburbs, each of a different nationality, pulled off one of the most spectacular heists of all time. In 2009, the Västberga robbery saw a gang of thieves pull off a $5 million robbery using a stolen Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter. The robbery stunned the police, turned the four gangsters into local heroes, and the money never was found.

Gyllenhaal & Marker found the book and brought it to Netflix. Given the complexity of the action, the film seems a strong match with the filmmaking duo that captured Alex Honnold’s death-defying ropes-free ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan. Aside from the Oscar, Free Soloalso a BAFTA for Best Documentary.

The filmmakers are repped by WME.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is pleased to announce Darren Aronofsky, Pedro Almodóvar, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marielle Heller, Dee Rees, Martin Scorsese, Tilda Swinton, and John Waters as special guest speakers for the 50th Anniversary Gala on Monday, April 29, 2019 in Alice Tully Hall. Reflecting and building upon the organization’s half-century introducing New York audiences to many of the industry’s most acclaimed and important filmmakers, the Gala will honor the Film Society’s legendary past and vibrant present, and look ahead as we extend our commitment to the film community.

The Gala is the most important fundraising event of the Film Society’s landmark anniversary year, and all proceeds will benefit the organization in its mission to support the art and craft of cinema. The Chaplin Award Gala will return in 2020.

The speakers each have a special connection to the Film Society’s history: Darren Aronofsky’s feature debut Pi (1998) was selected for the 27th New Directors/New Films, and The Wrestler (2008) was Closing Night of the 46th New York Film Festival; Jake Gyllenhaal’s film Wildlife, which he starred in and produced through his production company Nine Stories, premiered at last year’s New York Film Festival; Dee Rees’s feature debut, Pariah(2011), was selected for the 40th edition of New Directors/New Films, and her follow-up, Mudbound (2017), screened at the 55th New York Film Festival; Martin Scorsese has had seven films screen in the New York Film Festival beginning with Mean Streets in 1973, and he was the recipient of the Chaplin Award in 1998 and a guest speaker in the organization’s first education program; Pedro Almodóvar’s What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984) screened in New Directors/New Films, and since then he has premiered 10 films in the New York Film Festival; Marielle Heller’s directorial debut The Diary of a Teenage Girl was selected as Opening Night of ND/NF in 2015; Tilda Swinton appeared at NYFF with her films The Last of England (1987), Young Adam (2003), The Man from London (2007), and Only Lovers Left Alive (2013); and John Waters was the subject of a complete retrospective in 2014—the first in the United States.

The 50th Anniversary Gala will tell the story of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s semi-centennial, reflecting and building upon the organization’s half-century introducing New York audiences to many of the industry’s most acclaimed and important filmmakers. The special guest speakers will present this history alongside a collection of interviews and archival footage, photographs, and film clips that will reflect upon the organization and its role in New York City film culture. In honoring the past, the evening will celebrate a film community that is helping to shape the future of our art form.
